Step into the shoes of a future researcher working for the Unlock Collective and travel back in time to investigate a curious colour-change phenomenon. Solve puzzles to learn about the brighter and darker sides of Bath's history, including how the efforts of both the wealthy and working class shaped the city into what it is today.

Built from Beneath brings together the stories and objects of five museums in and around Bath. The game presents the fascinating history of the region, from it's prehistoric beginnings to the technological and societal developments of the modern era.

The Challenge

Made possible through support from the Bristol+Bath Creative R+D Trailblazer fund, Built From Beneath was developed to connect museums in the Bath area through the storytelling potential of games. The result is a unique digital escape room that reveals through lines between conversations about Bath heritage taking place at five smaller organisations - Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI), Radstock Museum, the Museum of Bath at Work, the Museum of Bath Stone, and Bath Medical Museum.

Built from Beneath is a truly collaborative effort that offered a rare opportunity to bring regional museums together to share their insights and experiences. Part of this was a co-creative workshop, hosted at BRLSI, where Echo Games and invited writers helped the five institutions to pin point the stories they wanted to tell and how these could be sequenced to express a shared narrative. To further advance the accuracy and authenticity of the game, the workshop was complemented by a series of site visits and and online interactions where historical information, images, and representations of key artefacts were exchanged.

We absolutely adore the finished game! Echo Games have been brilliant. They’ve really listened to the details of our collection and what makes us unique.
